The Augustine Choir
From the Manitoba Opera Chorus, the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir, Rose Bowl winners, students and bath-tub singers, the Augustine Choir is composed of more than 20 singers who bring a wide range of experience to the choral group. Some choristers have been members for 30 years, providing stability, while every year we welcome new voices to the fold.
Under the direction of Stuart McVey, the singers undertake a wide range of music from medieval to contemporary works. Each Sunday, two anthems are performed, and the congregation also joins in for songs that are selected mostly from the Augustine hymnal Voices United. We consciously consider the use of inclusive language but occasionally offer “heritage hymns.” Concerts have included performances of works such as Faure’s Requiem, and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Fundraising concerts have showcased sacred and secular music, including show tunes and love songs.
Membership in the Augustine Choir can be a way of enjoying music and a way of serving God and the congregation. Moreover, the choir is also a group that gathers socially several times a year. While love of music and singing brings the choir together, the development of supportive, caring, relationships holds the choir together.
The choir meets for rehearsal on Thursday evenings, between Labour Day and Victoria Day. New members are always welcome. For those who are considering a faith commitment to Augustine United Church, becoming a member of the choir is a good way to start.
