Music at Augustine

Music plays a significant role in both worship and community life at Augustine.

Our long tradition of Sunday worship with hymns, psalms, and choral anthems is enhanced by the inclusion of vocal solos and the occasional addition of instruments including flute, violin, drums, and guitar. Music for worship is drawn from many sources including Voices United, the hymnal of The United Church of Canada. Our selection of music is attentive to inclusive language, as it responds to the focus of worship and the character of our congregation. In addition to the hymnal, we draw on a rich variety of sources, as well as original compositions by our music director, covering a range of choral music genres including contemporary, gospel, folk, chant, classical, spiritual and medieval.

Community concerts of both sacred and secular music have been offered semi-annually. In addition to concerts, musical events include evenings featuring instrumental and vocal music for meditation with harp, guitar, drum, organ, and piano. Taizé prayer and vocal recitals are also a part of Augustine’s musical offerings to the community. As well, there have been events and Sunday worship featuring Jazz and djembe drumming. On several occasions we have had the “Rainbow Harmony Project” as guests.

Music programs at Augustine have involved many noted Winnipeg organists and directors including Sidney Bryans, Larry Weckwerth, Lotti Enns-Braun, and Dorothy Lawson, as well as vocal soloists John Bartlette, Heather Wilberforce, Richard Hurst, Ester Klassen, Valdine Anderson, Alan Blanchette, Donna Fletcher, and Melinda Enns.

Presently our music program is under the direction of Stuart McVey supported by section lead and soloist Deanna Smith.
