Baptism

Baptism is one of two sacraments in the United Church. Through baptism we proclaim the grace of God, who accepts all of us as children of God. By grace we are baptized into the one body of Christ in its wondrous diversity.

Infant Baptism

Parents requesting baptism for their child will be making a profession of faith and promising to raise their child in the Christian faith with the support of Augustine United Church. In order for an infant or child to receive the Sacrament of Baptism, at least one parent or guardian must be a member in good standing. Anyone wishing to become a member may do so by attending the New Members Group, which will help them develop their own personal statement of faith. The congregation of Augustine will promise to provide a place of Christian nurture and support for the child and for the parents. Inquiries about infant baptism may be directed to the minister.

Adult Baptism and Membership

Baptism is a prerequisite for membership in The United Church of Canada. As a member of the World Council of Churches, the United Church recognizes the baptisms of other Christian denominations. On the basis of their baptism into the one body of Christ, individuals seeking membership with Augustine United Church are invited to join the New Members Group. Adults who are not baptized are also invited to join the New Members Group to prepare for their baptism, as well as membership in The United Church of Canada.

The New Members Group meets for several weeks, usually in October/November, to: review the basics of the Christian faith; learn about the history and beliefs of the United Church of Canada, generally, and of Augustine United Church, specifically; develop personal statements of faith; and consider the meaning of baptism and membership all leading to a discernment with regard to receiving the Sacrament of Baptism and/or becoming a full member of the congregation. After the conclusion of the New Members class, baptism and new membership will be celebrated during Sunday morning worship.
